The long-delayed McCord Road Underpass project is moving ahead as scheduled. At Tuesday's Lucas County commissioners’ meeting, the board voted unanimously to approve temporary easements as part of the project. Construction is set to begin in the spring of 2014.

The project is designed to reduce traffic delays and safety concerns at the busy McCord crossing of Norfolk Southern's main East Coast-Chicago rail line.

Although project planning started early last decade, underpass construction gained impetus in 2010 when two Springfield High students were struck by an Amtrak train at the crossing.
