Sylvania marks Tree City USA title at annual celebration

The city of Sylvania will salute its tree population at the annual Arbor Day Celebration April 26 at the Administration Building.

The city of Sylvania will salute its tree population at the annual Arbor Day Celebration on April 26 at the Administration Building.

For more than 30 years the Arbor Day Foundation has designated Sylvania as a Tree City USA, a title given to tree-friendly communities nationwide. Sylvania has been recognized for its efforts in planting 7,700 trees on its streets since the 1970s.

Elementary school children are invited to pitch in a shovel of dirt for the planting of a European bird cherry tree donated by the Sylvania Rotary Club.

Pat O’Brien, parks and forestry superintendent, is slated to speak at the celebration. City Forester Art Landseadel, who began the city’s program, said that trees beautify the landscape, alleviate greenhouse effects, and prevent soil erosion.

The Northview Marching Band and local musician Eddie Boggs will perform. The Sylvania Arbor Day Celebration will be held from 11:30 a.m. to noon on April 26 at City Hall, 6730 Monroe St.
