Humane Society to get abused, displaced dogs

The Toledo Area Humane Society is taking in nine dogs from a southern Ohio hoarding case and two dogs displaced by Hurricane Isaac. Staff members picked up the dogs Monday from the Humane Society of the United States’ Emergency Placement Program.

The dogs from the hoarding situation were seized by the federal agency and Belmont County rescue officials in March. The Toledo Area Humane Society may be receiving three more dogs from the hoarding case later this week, officials said. More than 100 animals were rescued from a property in Belmont County including nearly 60 dogs, almost 40 cats, 14 horses, several goats, and a number of fowl suffering from a variety of medical conditions and a lack of care.

In addition to being underweight, many of the animals were scared and will require time before being placed for adoption, officials said. They have all had initial examinations and will receive full exams and behavior tests in Toledo. Many will be placed into temporary foster care.

As an emergency placement partner for the federal humane society, the Toledo office was on the list of organizations that the Humane Society of the United States reached out to for help in finding placement for the dogs.
