Blade sports writer David Briggs earned a second-place finish for beat reporting for newspapers with a circulation of 75,001-175,000 for 2012, according to the Associated Press Sports Editors contest judging.

Mr. Briggs, who covers Ohio State University athletics, earned a Top 10 finish during the first round of judging. An independent judge then ranked the top five and assigned honorable mention awards.

Some of Mr. Briggs’ submissions were the game story of OSU’s close win over Purdue; OSU athletic director Gene Smith being in the cross hairs of ardent OSU supporters but solidly backed by the school administration and its trustees; and athletic directors and their salaries.

Don Coble of the Florida Times-Union was first, Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star, third; Todd Jones of the Columbus Dispatch, fourth, and Justin Barney of the Florda Times-Union, fifth. Mr. Briggs earned an honorable-mention writing award at his previous newspaper in Columbia, Mo.
