The death of a 27-year-old man found hanging from a sheet in a cell at the Toledo Correctional Institution on Wednesday was suicide, authorities said.

Dale Boerio, formerly of Spencer Township, was discovered about 3:52 p.m. in his locked cell in the state prison on East Central Avenue by a corrections officer who was conducting security rounds, said Lt. Anne Ralston, of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

He was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 4:17 p.m., she said.

The preliminary ruling in the inmate's death is suicide, pending toxicology test, said Dr. James Patrick, Lucas County coroner.

Boerio entered the prison system in May, 2008, after a jury found him guilty in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on two counts each of rape and gross sexual imposition for sexually assaulting a young boy. He was serving a 40-year-to-life sentence.
