The southbound lanes have reopened on Detroit Avenue at the site of a sewer collapse a week ago, city officials said.

Both lanes were reopened today after the final curing of concrete poured around a manhole in the area at the Bancroft Street intersection that collapsed after two intersecting sewers beneath the street failed and earth surrounding the pipes washed away, said Jen Sorgenfrei, a spokesman for Mayor Bell.

The resulting void created a hole so large it swallowed a car, although the driver was not seriously hurt. Northbound Detroit and Bancroft reopened later last week after the hole was stabilized, but the southbound lanes remained closed while the sewers and a water main ruptured by the collapse were repaired and the hole was filled in and repaved.
