FREMONT — The Fremont City Council is expected to consider a boating ordinance for its reservoir at an Aug. 1 meeting.

The council held a first reading Thursday on a proposed ordinance that would prohibit recreational, gas-powered boats on the reservoir off Sandusky County Road 41.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources advocates allowing such boats, while others have expressed concerns about operating gas motors on a drinking water reservoir.

Under the proposed rules, electric-powered motors exceeding 10-horsepower would be prohibited and the roughly 100-acre reservoir would be designated as a no-wake zone.
