The State Medical Board of Ohio has permanently revoked the medical license of a former Maumee cardiologist convicted of illegally distributing prescription pain medicine.

Barry DeRan, 55, had pleaded guilty in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on July 23 to four counts each of trafficking in drugs and attempted trafficking in drugs.

In November, 2012, DeRan of Lambertville was indicted on 15 counts each of aggravated possession of drugs and aggravated trafficking in drugs. The Ohio State Board of Pharmacy investigated the case and searched his home and office in March, 2012, with the help of law enforcement.

DeRan admitted in court that he improperly prescribed pain medication to people he knows or those referred to him multiple times in 2009.

The state board revoked his license to practice medicine in Ohio on Wednesday. DeRan signed a court order Aug. 7 agreeing to surrender his license.

He will be sentenced Sept. 11. He could receive up to 10 years in prison.
