Excessive bacteria has prompted state health officials to issue advisories against swimming at several Great Lakes beaches, including ones in Monroe, Ottawa, and Erie counties.

In Michigan’s Monroe County, an advisory was posted Wednesday for Luna Pier City Beach after results from water samples drawn on Tuesday showed high levels of E. coli bacteria. The advisory remains in effect until further notice.

According to the Ohio Department of Health’s Web site, swimming advisories recently went into effect for Port Clinton City Beach and South Bass Island State Park in Ottawa County, and Bay View West, Whites Landing, and Sawmill Creek beaches in Erie County.

Advisories recently in effect for Maumee Bay State Park in Lucas County have been lifted.

Ottawa County’s East Harbor State Park — Ohio’s oldest state park and one traditionally with the fewest bacteria problems — has not had a single bacteria advisory in 2013, according to state health department online records.
