Resurfaced airport runway reopens

The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority formally reopened the main runway at Toledo Express Airport on Friday after completion of a $10.25 million resurfacing project.

Earlier phases of the work, when either end was milled and repaved, were done with the runway's working length shortened, but the 10,600 feet of tarmac was completely shut down Aug. 16 while its middle section was milled and repaved. Lights and signs were replaced during the closing.

“The last time we saw this runway repaved was 1998, so this rehabilitation was definitely needed,” port President Paul Toth said during a ribbon ceremony Friday.

The repaving project was funded primarily by a $9.25 million federal grant, and employed 100 people during construction.
