TEMPERANCE — The Bedford Township Board is making plans to update the community’s master plan for land use and development and will engage the services of Monroe County as well as a private firm it has yet to hire.

The update issue appeared on the agenda for last week’s regular meeting at the request of Trustee Nancy Tienvieri, who said she had received questions about it from a lot of citizens.

In a memo to board members, she wrote “There are many public meetings that need to take place before the township can officially move toward any changes necessary for the master plan. Time passes quickly, and I would like to hear input on what has been done and what is planned for the short term and long term future.”

Bedford’s current master plan was adopted in 2002 and updated in 2003 and 2008. Supervisor Greg Stewart was involved in putting it together as well as the master plan in Luna Pier, where he was city administrator.

He said the township has a steering committee that will act as a guide during the update process.

He described the master plan as "a vision of what we want the community to look like. It’s like planning for a house you want to build.

“There will be public meetings. With a master plan, you want some kind of consensus. It’s a community vision, and you want as many people involved as possible,” the supervisor said.

The updated master plan will lead to a review of the township’s ordinances, to make sure they are in agreement, he added.
