Vietnam War Veteran Manuel Caro of Toledo will receive the Latino Military Service of Distinction Award on Friday from the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission.

The Latino Awards Gala will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Columbus. Other honors include the Governor’s Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan Award and the Nuestra Familia Award.

Mr. Caro, 66, who received a Purple Heart after being being wounded during his last mission, is perhaps better known as a longtime civil rights activist. A Harvard University graduate, he is a retired university administrator who spent his career championing for better educational opportunities for Latino students.

The Ohio Latino Affairs Commission was created in the late 1970s, and serves as a resource and advocate to the General Assembly and governor on all issues of interest and concern to the Hispanic community.
