Volunteers will be passing out information about fire prevention and community assistance programs Saturday to households in East Toledo.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio, Columbia Gas, and the East Toledo Family Center are partnering to pass out the free information to some 1,000 homes near East Broadway and Varland Avenue from 9 a.m. to noon.

Many of the house fires in that area are caused by alternate heating sources, so the packets will include information on natural gas bill-assistance options and energy efficiency, among other topics.

To volunteer to canvass on Saturday, contact Patricia Crawford, Americorps volunteer and Red Cross Community preparedness specialist, at 419-329-2557 or patricia.crawford@redcross.org by 5 p.m. today.
