Toledoans, break out your rakes this weekend, especially if you live in the 43613 ZIP Code area.

The city’s leaf-collection effort is set to start Monday in that part of West Toledo. Officials Friday urged residents to start raking their leaves to the pavement edge or, on curbed streets, just over the curb.

Leaves should not be placed on boulevards or cul-de-sac islands. To prevent damage to leaf-collection machinery, other yard waste such as brush, sticks, bagged leaves, or grass clippings should not be mixed in.

Leaf collection typically begins in outlying aeas that have the most trees and moves into the central city, with a second pass made through leafier neighborhoods in December if weather allows. Along with the posting of signs several days before collection starts in a particular area, schedule updates are available on the toledo.oh.gov Web site, via Facebook and Twitter, and this year by registering for Toledo Alerts, a text-messaging program.

Updates to the leaf collection schedule will be posted at www.toledo.oh.gov. Residents can also follow the city on Twitter or Facebook for updates, or new this year, they can sign up for Toledo Alerts, a text message program that will notify residents of leaf collection and other city services once they have registered online.

Leaf collection is under way in many suburban Toledo areas.
