MONROE — One person was killed in a fiery single-car crash Wednesday on Newport Road in Monroe County’s Berlin Township, authorities said.

The victim, who was driving alone, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities did not release the victim’s identity.

The victim was driving west on Newport about a mile east of Joann Drive just after midnight. when the driver failed to round a curve in the road and lost control of the car, causing it to crash into a cement culvert, sheriff deputies said. The car then overturned, came to rest on its wheels in a grassy area, and caught fire, they said.

The driver did not wear a seat belt, the sheriff’s office said.
