The Lucas County Commissioners today approved dropping the spouses of county employees from the employee health care benefit plan.

The change to the health care program, which will become effective March 1, will affect all the county's 3,200 workers, who are both unionized and not in unions. Currently, about 680 employees have a spouse listed on county health insurance.

The commissioners said discontinuing spousal coverage is projected to save a minimum of $2.3 million annually.

The amendment to the health care plan will not effect employee dependents who are eligible for the county health care benefit.
