The United Way of Greater Toledo will team up with the Lucas County treasurer, commissioners, and community volunteers to provide free tax prep for working people.

“This aims to help and assist and empower hard-working families that allow them to lift their lives,” Karen Mathison, the United Way’s president and chief executive officer, said Friday at a program kickoff.

One goal of providing free tax-return help is to help low-income and middle-income households claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, which returns federal tax-refund dollars to residents’ pockets and boosts the local economy, county Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz said.

The announcement was made to coincide with Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service.

Those making less than $52,000 qualify for the free tax help. The service is performed by volunteers who are certified IRS-trained tax preparers and is available at 50 locations in Lucas, Wood, and Ottawa counties.

Appointments may be made by calling United Way of Greater Toledo at 2-1-1. Information is available at unitedwaytoledo.org/taxprep.
