Bids sought for Broadway rebuild after water break

Part of a major South Toledo street closed by a water-main break may take several weeks to repair, and that will depend on the weather, a city spokesman said Thursday.

Lisa Ward, the city's public information officer, said a 48-by-80-foot section of Broadway near South Hawley Street must be rebuilt because of damage caused by the 30-inch water main break on Wednesday.

In an interoffice memorandum, Douglas Stephens, a senior engineer with the city division of engineering services, said he expected to obtain three quotes from local contractors by the end of today to award an emergency street-repair contract.

“Weather permitting we may be able to complete faster than two weeks,” Mr. Stephens wrote. “Also, we will construct so that the road can be open to traffic prior to full completion of the repair.”

He estimated the street work to cost about $80,000 and wrote that the city will seek Ohio Public Works Commission funding to offset at least part of that expense.

The water main has been repaired, but the rushing water caused extensive cracks and heaves in Broadway between South Hawley and Stebbins streets.

Until Broadway reopens, traffic is detoured via South Avenue, the Anthony Wayne Trail, and Harvard Boulevard.
