Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins announced Friday the city’s intent to work with area employers to provide summer jobs for local youth.

Speaking at a news conference on the 22nd floor of One Government Center, he implored area employers to consider hiring teens and young adults for summer jobs. The Toledo area’s youth unemployment rate is about 17 percent, the mayor said.

The city has scheduled a Summer Teen Job Fair on May 3. The event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SeaGate Convention Centre, will be open to people ages 16-21 who preregister. Job fair information is available by calling 419-246-1417.

Employers unable to offer jobs were encouraged to consider creating internships or volunteer positions, or to donate to the Youth Commission.
