Waterville accountant who cheated on taxes going to prison

A Waterville income tax preparer who failed to file income tax returns on more than $1.3 million in personal income was sentenced Thursday to a year in federal prison.

Ronald D. Durbin, 72, principal officer and operator of Citizens Tax Service, also was ordered by U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey Helmick to pay a yet-to-be-determined amount of restitution.

Durbin pleaded guilty in August to four counts of failing to file and pay income tax returns on income of $286,604 in 2006, $306,620 in 2007, $363,031 in 2008, and $348,881 in 2009.
