MONROE — The Monroe County Animal Shelter has updated its cat room thanks to a $30,000 grant.

The shelter at 911 S. Raisinville Rd. is operated by the county sheriff’s office and can house about 80 cats between the main cat room and other areas. The grant is from a private foundation that asked to remain anonymous.

With the grant money, the shelter purchased new multi-unit cat condos with 52 individual spaces that can be combined by opening holes between cages for the cats to move through. Cats were previously housed in stacked wire crates.

Volunteers helped assemble the condos over the weekend, and the shelter also will repaint the room.

The shelter is open for kennel visits and adoptions from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
