A Toledo police dog and its handler will receive additional training after the dog bit a 9-year-old boy.

The German shepard, J.J., bit the boy June 11 at the officer’s home. According to a police report, Officer Brett Kohlman did not see the attack, but heard the boy — who was there playing with the officer’s children — yell and saw him run out of the house. The boy was taken to Toledo Hospital to be treated for a bite and scratches. The police report states the boy suffered two puncture wounds, which did not require stitches. He was treated and released the same day.

Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan said the additional training should ensure that the dog does not have any further unintentional bites.
