The American Red Cross will collect food and hygiene items for military service members deployed in Afghanistan from noon to 8 p.m Friday at Trinity Episcopal Church at St. Clair and Adams streets in downtown Toledo.

This is Toledo’s first Independence Day collection event.

Ideal items for donation are beef or turkey jerky; shampoo, conditioner, and body wash; chips and pretzels; coffee and sugars or creamers; crackers; toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash; deodorant; granola bars; gum; phone cards; shaving cream; shower shoes, and sweet snacks, such as cookies or Rice Krispies treats.

Individual or travel-size packets are best for coffee sweeteners, chips, and crackers, and sweet snacks.

For those who cannot make it to the donation site Friday, the collection will continue throughout the month of July at the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio office at 3100 W. Central Ave.
