Starlite Plaza demolished

Crews work to on the demolition of Starlite Plaza on Monroe Street.

An eight-sided cupola that once crowned the roof of the former Churchill‘s supermarket in the Starlite Plaza on Monroe Street in Sylvania now lies strewn amid a pile of rubble as demolition progresses at the center area of the shopping center.

The 90,000-square foot building, built in 1971 was originally home to Churchill’s and housed a supermarket, separate hardware center, a restaurant, a Walt Churchill‘s Adventure Shop that sold sporting goods, and a small museum dedicated to the military exploits of the late Major Gen. Walter A. Churchill, who died in 1998.

The supermarket building, which later became a Farmer Jack’s and a Bassett‘s Market, is being demolished by Starlite’s new owner, ProMedica. The Toledo-based health care network plans to build a $45 million Health and Wellness Center on the 11-acre site.
