Maumee City Council accepted the resignation of David Theaker at its Monday night meeting, after he was charged with stealing gas from the city for his personal use.

Mr. Theaker submitted his letter of resignation effective July 23, but this was the first chance council had to accept it because it had not met since then.

Mayor Richard Carr said Mr. Theaker’s resignation will not deter Maumee from prosecuting him for the two counts of theft in office he is charged with. The crime is a fifth-degree felony.

Prosecution is being handled by a Lucas County prosecutor because the city of Maumee is a victim in the case.

Mayor Carr said the task of filling Mr. Theaker’‍s position with the city — a supervisor in the service division — will be handled by the personnel committee beginning today. He also said Maumee is instituting a stricter policy of oversight for employees who use city vehicles and equipment.
