Forecasts: Few hot days in Aug., Sept.

Many factors contribute to the algae blooms plaguing western Lake Erie each summer, but this year hot weather has not been among them, and that’s not likely to change, forecasters said Thursday.

Following a July that was among Toledo’s coolest on record, no big August heat outbreaks are predicted.

Long-range outlooks show “equal chances” of unusually cool, warm, or normal temperatures during the next three months, and there’s nothing in the shorter-term forecasts to suggest an imminent change from the current pattern, said Marty Mullen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

“We’re going to be near normal, maybe slightly below, for a while now,” he said Thursday.

Accu-Weather Inc., a private forecasting service based in State College, Pa., offered a similar outlook with the long-range Toledo forecast posted Thursday on its Web site.

While that outlook predicts a brief spate of warmer weather during mid-August, with forecasts for highs near 90 on Aug. 19, 20, and 21, it generally sticks to the same script.

Toledo’s normal highs in August range from 83 through Aug. 12 and go down to 80 at month’s end.

Except for those three days of low 90s, Accu-Weather’s outlook predicts highs ranging between 75 and 85 between now and Aug. 31.

Its outlook stretching out to Sept. 20 called for no unusual warmth during early September, either.
