The Sylvania community is hosting a first ever Bike Sylvania for cyclists and the recreational bicyclist.

Area organizations, including Olander Park System, the city of Sylvania, and the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District, are encouraging families to get out their two-wheelers and join others for a bicycling tour around town.

Family Bike Day, the first weekend event, is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Centennial Terrace, 5773 Centennial Rd. Morning riders of all ages and levels can choose several different routes through Sylvania Township and city of Sylvania parks.

Cycling specialists will be on hand to offer tips, to provide information about local cycling clubs, and to introduce residents to other bicycle enthusiasts.

On Sunday, watch or participate in the 2014 Senior State Criterium Championships hosted by the fourth annual Sylvania Cycling Classic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Sylvania. The course loops around Burnham Park between Erie Street and Maplewood Avenue. The competition begins with an amateur race at 8 a.m., followed by a children’s fun race at noon. The competition finishes with the Elite Men’s and Women’s races.
