Area parades mark Labor Day holiday
Monroe’s event 1st in 50 years
8/30/2014Parades in Monroe and Toledo are among the area celebrations planned to mark Labor Day.
A parade takes place in downtown Monroe at 10 a.m. today. The route starts at Jones Avenue near Navarre Field.
The parade is the first one to mark Labor Day in Monroe in 50 years, according to the Monroe Lenawee Central Labor Council, which is sponsoring the event.
Speakers, including the council’s president Lee Sharpe and Michigan AFL-CIO President Karla Swift, will speak at 1 p.m. at the Philip Murray Building, 41 W. Front St. in Monroe.
The Northwest Ohio Labor Day Parade starts at 9 a.m. Monday at Summit and Monroe streets in downtown Toledo.
The parade’s grand marshals are Dal and Francine Lawrence.
After the parade, the Northwest Ohio Labor Fest will take place at the Lucas County Fairgrounds in Maumee. The event includes a program at 1 p.m., live music, a car show, and food and drinks.
