West Bancroft Street in central Toledo was reopened to traffic about two hours after it was closed for a gas leak this evening.

A spokesman for Columbia Gas said a private contractor using an auger to dig a fence post hole struck the gas line just after 5 p.m. at 221 West Bancroft.

The street was closed between Fulton and Putnam streets while the line was repaired.

Spokesman Chris Kozak said a 2-inch plastic medium-pressure main line was ruptured. Crews evacuated three structures and temporarily interrupted service to two structures. He said the gas leak was repaired and the street reopened at 7:15 p.m. Crews were continuing to work on restoring gas to 221 West Bancroft, expected to be completed tonight.

Mr. Kozak said there‘‍s no indication that anyone had called OUPS, the “call before you dig” service.
