Mr. Noonan received 1,872 votes in the November council election, missing out on a seat by 153 votes. Mr. Thomson also ran, earning 1,073 votes.

The vacancy was created when Dan Hazard resigned last week as he prepares to begin his first term as Maumee Municipal Court judge. He defeated longtime Judge Gary Byers in November.

Mr. Laranga served as Mr. Hazard's campaign manager during the judge's race.

The six sitting council members have until Jan. 3 — 30 days from Mr. Hazard's resignation — to make an appointment. If a majority cannot be reached, Mayor Richard Carr will make the appointment.
