2 charged in South Toledo sex assault

Kenneth Moore was arrested after an off-duty officer recognized his resemblance to a suspect in a sexual assault.

The man walking near South Reynolds Road and Glendale Avenue seemed oddly familiar to an off-duty police officer who happened to be driving by.

The unidentified officer quickly realized the pedestrian's striking resemblance to a composite sketch of a sexual assault suspect the Toledo Police Department had released earlier Thursday, police Sgt. Tim Campbell said.

Hours later, the man, Kenneth Moore, 19, and a youth he was walking with, Anthony Mitchell, 16, were each charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, and two counts of sexual assault.

Mr. Moore, of 801 Magnolia St., was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court Friday morning and was ordered held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $400,000 bond.

During a hearing at the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center, the Mitchell youth was ordered held in detention. Lori Olender, an assistant county prosecutor, said that because of the boy's age and the charges' severity, she must file for adult certification. If it is granted, the teen's case would be moved to Lucas County Common Pleas Court. A certification hearing was set for Wednesday. Ms. Olender predicted the hearing would be continued.

The suspects are accused of going to a 23-year-old woman's Ryan Road apartment in South Toledo Monday claiming to sell candles for a fund-raiser, Sergeant Campbell said. The suspects allegedly forced her to strip and perform oral sex, reportedly threatening her with guns. Sergeant Campbell said police did not yet know how guns had been obtained.

The woman reported that her engagement ring, a video-game system, and money were stolen.
