A veteran Toledo police sergeant pleaded guilty Wednesday to a reduced charge of loitering following a Columbus-area prostitution sting last month.

Toledo police Sgt. Mack Collins III, 48, of Maumee was arraigned in Franklin Municipal Court, where he pleaded guilty to a lesser offense of loitering, a third-degree misdemeanor. He was originally charged with solicitation, also a misdemeanor offense.

Sergeant Collins will be sentenced May 10, according to court documents.

The officer responded to an online advertisement. In March, he encountered an undercover officer, instead of a prostitute, according to a Columbus police spokesman.

According to an affidavit filed in Franklin County Municipal Court, Sergeant Collins offered $100 to engage in sexual activity.

Sergeant Collins, who has been with the Toledo Police Department since October, 1994, was not arrested. A summons was issued March 24, according to Columbus police.

Sergeant Collins was placed on restricted duty, completing administrative work in the operations office. Toledo police previously stated he will remain there until the conclusion of an internal affairs investigation and his court case in Columbus.

Mr. Collins’ attorney, William Nesbitt, declined to comment.
