Second competency evaluation ordered for man accused of toddler's murder

A former North Toledo man accused in the death of his girlfriend's 1-year-old daughter was ordered Tuesday to undergo a second psychological evaluation to determine whether he is competent to stand trial and whether he was legally insane at the time of the offense.

Joshua M. Herron, 30, who now lists an address in Canton, Ohio, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, and endangering children stemming from the April 4 death of Serenity Hunter. Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Stacy Cook set a hearing in his case for July 31.

Mr. Herron, who is being held in the Lucas County jail on a $2.5 million bond, allegedly took the toddler to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center on April 1, telling police he had gotten upset with her, grabbed her by the face, shook her, and threw her onto the couch.
