PIONEER, Ohio — The Ohio Highway Patrol today identified David Kirk of Toledo as the driver killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday about two miles east Pioneer, a Williams County community.

Mr. Kirk, 49, who was partially ejected from the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, in the county’s Madison Township, according to the patrol’s Defiance post.

The vehicle, a minivan, was eastbound on U.S. 20 about 8:50 a.m. and was being driven erratically, according to a crash witness. The vehicle went off the south side of U.S. 20 about a half-mile east of County Road 16, then drove back into the eastbound lane. The vehicle appeared to then swerve back off the south side of the road, striking a utility pole on the left side of the vehicle. The roof of the minivan, which ended up on its left side, was cut off by emergency responders to get to the driver.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene, the highway patrol said.
