An inmate at the Lucas County jail died this weekend, officials said.

Alfred Estis, 34, of Toledo, was pronounced dead Saturday night, said Lucas County Sheriff Sgt. Dave Carter.

Estis, who had been in the jail since March 20 awaiting trial on two counts of rape, and one count each of abduction and felonious assault, appears to have died of natural causes, the sergeant said.

Estis was found face down and unresponsive in a medical unit at about 6:05 p.m. Saturday. Officials started to perform chest compressions and called for paramedics from the Toledo Fire Department. Paramedics pronounced Estis dead at 6:25 p.m.

An autopsy was performed today. Results were not immediately available.

According to documents filed in Toledo Municipal Court, Estis was accused of holding a woman against her will for four days in March. During that time he allegedly beat and bit her while also threatening to kill her. The woman was raped multiple times, according to an affidavit. Estis was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury.
