1 killed, several injured in Monroe County crash
7/6/2018MONROE — A van carrying seven developmentally disabled adults and two employees from a care facility collided with a truck in Frenchtown Township on Friday, leaving one man dead and several others injured.
An employee for an adult care facility in Taylor, Mich., was driving another employee and seven developmentally disabled adults back to the facility after a trip to Calder Dairy in Carleton, Mich., when a Matco Tool truck struck the van they were riding in about 2:30 p.m.
One man, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene, and two other occupants suffered critical injuries and were flown by helicopter to area hospitals, Michigan State Police said.
Authorities have identified the man who was killed but aren’t releasing his name until relatives are notified.
The van’s six other occupants were sent by ambulance to area hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to not life-threatening. The truck’s driver was also injured and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.
The truck was traveling north on Telegraph Road and had the right of way through the intersection with Heiss Road, police said. The truck lost control after the collision and came to a stop in a field on the west side of Telegraph Road, just north of Heiss Road.
The van overturned and landed on its passenger side, trapping the injured occupants for a time, police said.
