Campus Notes: Softball star from St. Ursula in John Carroll Hall of Fame

Softball standout Carrie McVicker was inducted into the John Carroll University Hall of Fame Sept. 26.

McVicker, a 1994 graduate of St. Ursula Academy, still holds the school record at John Carroll for home runs hit in one season with 14.

She was the Blue Streaks' starting catcher for four seasons before graduating in 1998.

McVicker was a three-time all-Ohio Athletic Conference selection. At the time of her graduation, she held school records in career hits (140), doubles (31), home runs (20), and runs batted in (83).

McVicker, who was a team captain in 1997 and 1998, was named the NCAA Division III catcher of the year in 1998.

That same year, she led all Division III hitters in home runs with 14.

She batted .394 as a senior and had a career average of .402.

McVicker excelled at softball, volleyball, basketball, and golf at St. Ursula.

She was elected to the John Carroll hall of fame in her first year of eligibility and is only the second softball player to be admitted.

McVicker, who is married to David DeWitt, lives in Elyria, Ohio, and teaches in the Cleveland Public School District.

SOCCER: Bethany Cousino (Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central) scored her first goal of the season for Adrian College Sept. 27.

Cousino gave the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead over Trine University. Adrian went on to a 6-0 victory.

Cousino, a sophomore forward, was one of four players to start in all 18 games last year. She ranked second on the team in shots (41) and scored both of her goals of the season in a 3-0 win over Rochester College.

VOLLEYBALL: The Owens Community College volleyball team went 2-2 in the competitive Parkland Invitational in Champaign, Ill., Sept. 26-27.

The Express has an overall record of 28-9. With a 3-0 win over Lorain Community College on Oct. 1, Owens improved its record to 5-0 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

Seven of the nine teams participating in the Parkland Invitational were ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association Top 25.

Owens, which is ranked No.17, lost to top ranked Kishwaukee 3-2. The Express then defeated No. 30 Vincennes 3-1 and No. 24 Kalamazoo Valley 3-2. But Owens then lost to No. 18 Kirkwood 3-0.

Coach Sonny Lewis said his team used a well-balanced attack with five players finishing with more than 20 kills.

The Express was led by Chae Small (Monroe High School), who finished with 33 kills. Amanda Mick (Defiance) had 30 kills, while Brittney Bradner (Cardinal Stritch), and Katie Mullis (Lenawee Christian) each had 24 kills. Brooke Hearn (Erie Mason) finished with 21 kills.

The defensive leader was Cori Williams (Bowsher), who had 70 digs. Hearn and Small had 27 and 24 digs, respectively.

Mick had 18 blocks, Bradner added 17, and Mullis chipped in with 14 blocks.

CROSS-COUNTRY: Heidelberg College cross-country runner Devin Butcher (Bowling Green High School) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Runner of the Week Sept. 29.

Butcher, a junior, took fourth place at the Otterbein Invitational with a time of 25:11.7 on Sept. 27. Butcher helped the 'Berg take sixth as a team at the invitational in Westerville, Ohio.

Butcher crossed the finish line just four seconds outside of first place and ahead of runners from six other OAC schools.

On Sept. 13, Butcher won the Carl Broughton Invitational in Marietta, Ohio, completing the race in 27:45.84.

FOOTBALL: Southview graduate Aaron Waldie had 143 all-purpose yards for Hillsdale College in a 24-17 loss to Ashland College on Sept. 27.

Waldie, a senior wide receiver, had nine catches for 94 yards. He also returned three kickoffs for 49 yards.

Through five games this season, Waldie has 25 catches for 316 yards (12.6 per catch) and two touchdowns.

GOLF: Bowling Green High School graduate John Powers was named the Mid-American Conference golfer of the week on Sept. 24.

Powers, a junior at Bowling Green State University, shot a 54-hole score of 209 at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational. His total was just one short of a new school record.

The Falcons' captain opened with a 68-69 and finished with a 72, which included five straight birdies at one point.

VOLLEYBALL: Defiance College freshman Kristin Nicely (Ayersville High School) was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks Sept. 29.

Nicely helped Defiance to a pair of conference victories over Hanover (3-2) and Franklin (3-0) on Sept. 26 and 27.

TENNIS: Kyle Doyle (Anthony Wayne), a sophomore at Augustana College, got his first win of the season on Sept. 28.

Doyle teamed with junior Kurtis Carls (Utica, Ill.) to defeat Nick Goodknight and Mike Flynn (8-1) of St. Ambrose at No. 3 doubles.
