Historic Toledo firehouse damaged by small blaze

A historic North Toledo firehouse sustained about $6,000 damage Tuesday when a small fire broke out during renovations.

Toledo fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said a piece of wood caught fire about noon when a construction crew was soldering copper gutters together on the hose tower at Station 3 at Bush and North Erie streets. Workers tried to extinguish the fire while calling for emergency crews, the lieutenant said.

The 1927-vintage firehouse has been closed during the renovations, which began in August and are scheduled for completion this spring, with firefighters working out of Station 13 in East Toledo in the interim. Lieutenant Hertzfeld said he did not expect the fire damage to delay the reopening.
