An East Toledo man arrested after a crash that seriously injured two Toledo police officers was indicted Monday by a Lucas County grand jury.

Matthew Hartford, 28, of 308 Oakdale Ave. was charged with two counts each of aggravated vehicular assault and felonious assault and one count each of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer and failure to stop after an accident. The indictment alleges he was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Officers Jeron Ellis and Todd Mikolajczyk were headed south on East Broadway about 4:45 a.m. July 3 when their sport utility vehicle was struck by an SUV that allegedly ran a stop sign at Greenwood Avenue. Hartford, who reportedly climbed out of his sunroof and fled, had been fleeing a state trooper who was trying to stop him for speeding.
