A man escaped a large fire Wednesday that destroyed a central Toledo house.

Firefighters reported about 1:48 a.m. to a fully-engulfed property in the 500 block of Palmwood Avenue. Officials identified it as a “code red” building that is unsafe to enter, Toledo fire spokesman Pvt. Sterling Rahe said.

The building was initially reported as vacant, but firefighters learned one man safely left. He said he crawled out of a basement window, Private Rahe said.

The man, whom authorities did not identify, appeared to have minor burns on his hands. He was assessed and taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center for evaluation.

The building is a total loss after the fire. The cause remained undetermined, Private Rahe said.
