Weather entices fishermen along Maumee River banks

Finally, warmer temperatures are becoming less of a rarity. And that means young and old alike are grabbing their fishing poles and enjoying the great outdoors and all of the wonderful water activities this area has to offer.

Known for its abundant supply of fresh water, area fishermen have long taken advantage of the Maumee River's spring runs of walleye and white bass.

Blade photographer Don Flory captured this great shot in downtown Toledo on May 15, 1982. He used his telephoto lens to compress the scene and give the impression of elbow-to-elbow fishing near the old Toledo Edison steam plant.

Even though they weren’t quite packed in like sardines, a bumper crop of fishermen enticed by warm temperatures and sunny skies crowded along the banks of the Maumee on that gorgeous Saturday in search of the wily white bass. Temperatures topped out around 81 degrees that afternoon.
