Interim chief appointed in Bedford

Ex-superintendent had long career with district


TEMPERANCE — The Bedford Public Schools ’ Board of Education on Thursday approved a contract making Jon White the district's interim superintendent for the 2012-13 year.

Mr. White will fill the position being vacated by Ted Magrum, who is retiring.

He starts Oct. 1 and will be paid $350 a day with no benefits.

He will not be paid for days he does not work.

Mr. White, 65, had a long career with the district, as superintendent, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, high school principal, high school dean of students, and special education teacher before his retirement a few years ago.

At the special meeting Thursday, board President Michael Smith expressed the board's appreciation to Mr. White for "stepping up to the plate on short notice" to fill the school system's top administrative position.

Mr. White did not attend the meeting.

The vote to approve Mr. White's contract was 6-0, with member Dale Barton absent.
