Sylvania roundabout possibly delayed
Despite torrential downpour, officials hopeful for opening
8/13/2014The torrential downfall of rain that pelted Sylvania most of Monday and for a short period Tuesday may have delayed the construction for the Sylvania-Metamora and Mitchaw roundabout, but officials are still aiming to open it within about a week.
The day-long rain pushed back concrete work scheduled for Monday to today, Josh Hazard, Lucas County Engineer’s Office construction supervisor, said.
Despite the rain the Lucas County engineers are still aiming to open up the roundabout on time on Aug. 21 or that following weekend, he said. Toledo Edison is scheduled to set pole bases for street lighting today.
The three-way intersection in Sylvania Township was closed July 7 to allow a 45-day build for the project. The intersection formerly required northbound and southbound motorists on Mitchaw to stop at a stop sign for the two-way traffic on Sylvania-Metamora Road.
The new traffic circle, constructed by Geddis Paving of Toledo, will handle increased traffic in the area by keeping traffic flowing in all directions. The project’s estimated cost, mostly covered by state and federal funds, is $1,045,000.
During construction, motorists have been rerouted using Kilburn Road to Brint Road, or Centennial Road to Brint Road to Mitchaw or Kilburn. Those drivers hoping to cut through Pacesetter Park to circumvent the roundabout, which is prohibited, are blocked by crews working on the park’s parking lot upgrade.
