Daniel L. Czyzewski of Oregon, a retired Toledo firefighter and former Oregon city councilman, died Friday at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center. He was 77.

Mr. Czyzewski died of complications from lung surgery, Therese Jordan, his daughter, said.

He retired as a firefighter in 1995 after 28 years at the Toledo Fire Department. Most recently he was assigned to Station 18 on Lewis Avenue in West Toledo

In retirement, Mr. Czyzewski served for more than 10 years on the Oregon Civil Commission until the time of his death.

Before that, he was at different times a member of Oregon City Council and a number of Oregon's boards and commissions such as Board of Zoning Appeals and Planning Commission.

He was appointed as an Oregon city councilman in 1999, when the seat was vacated by Bernie Quilter, who resigned as council president to become Lucas County clerk of courts. Once the term ended, Mr. Czyzewski unsuccessfully ran to be retained in that position.

“Dan was a person who enjoyed service to the community,” Michael Beazley, Oregon’s city administrator, said. “And he was just a person who was very good at working together with others and was always ready to help and to solve problems.”

Said Mrs. Jordan: “He was very proud to be a [Toledo] fireman. And he was very proud to serve the city of Oregon.”

Mr. Czyzewski was born Feb. 20, 1941, in Toledo to Angela and Joseph Czyzewski.

In 1959, he graduated from Macomber High School and signed up to serve in the Army.

He later served in Spain and Germany until he got his honorable discharge several years later.

Upon his discharge, Mr. Czyzewski returned to Toledo and worked for Kroger for two years until he became a firefighter, his daughter said,

In 1963, he married Sharon Rogers. She died in 2012.

In his free time, Mr. Czyzewski enjoyed restoring and repairing classic cars. He also liked to attend NASCAR races. He was proud of having restored a 1948 Chevy Business Coupe.

He was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Oregon, where he volunteered as an usher and reader.

His other memberships included the Placers Car Club of Toledo, where he was a former vice president.

Surviving are his daughter, Therese Jordan; son, Marty Czyzewski; sister, Barbara Masten; brother, Robert Czyzewski, and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd., Oregon, with the last alarm service at 7 p.m. that day.

A memorial Mass will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 212 N. Stadium Rd., Oregon.

The family suggests tributes to Toledo Firefighters Museum or the church.
