  • COLUMBUS — A Gibsonburg, Ohio, facility was one of two companies awarded provisional state licenses Friday to process medical marijuana.

Standard Wellness Company LLC won provisional approval to run a processing facility in the village’s Clearview Industrial Park. The company now has nine months to get the businesses operational and will need a certificate of operation approved by the state following an inspection.

The award was part of the second round of approvals by the Ohio Department of Commerce, which is authorized to approve up to 40 provisional licenses. It was the only northwest Ohio site approved in the second round.

Earlier this month, Ohio Green Grow won provisional approval to run a processing facility at 367 E. State Line Rd, Toledo. The location corresponds with a cultivation site owned by an affiliated company, OhiGrow.

In June, Department of Commerce policy adviser Mark Hamlin acknowledged that inspection delays at cultivation sites made it impossible to meet the Sept. 8 date set by Ohio’s 2016 medical-marijuana law. House Bill 523, the Ohio law that legalized marijuana for medicinal use only, left it up to state agencies to determine the rules for medical marijuana's cultivation, processing, and sale.
