BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns have selected LSU linebacker Barkevious Mingo with the No. 6 overall pick in their first NFL draft under owner Jimmy Haslam.

The 6-foot-4, 241-pound Mingo played defensive end in college, but will likely be used as an outside pass rusher by the Browns, who are switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 front under new coach Rob Chudzinski and coordinator Ray Horton.

Unable to work out a trade in the first round, the Browns selected Mingo over Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner, who was still available.

Mingo decided to skip his senior season at LSU to jump to the NFL. He raised his profile with a strong performance at the scouting combine.

Mingo, who didn't start playing football until his junior year in high school, started 10 games last season and finished with 4.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss.
