Owens Community College baseball, softball teams begin NJCAA tournament play

The Owens Community College softball team will compete in the NJCAA Region XII tournament today through Friday in Battle Creek, Mich.

The Express (21-15), under coach Duane Lanham, will face the winner of Ancilla College/Grand Rapids CC game at 6 p.m. today.

Three players carry batting averages above .400 — Maresha Scott (Maumee graduate), .486; Melanie Iacoangeli (Ida), .445, and Jaylee Glad (Ida), .419. Emily Rockman (Springfield) and Amanda Sinay (Cardinal Stritch) are both at .389. Olivia Reeder (Genoa) is hitting .342 and leads the team with 36 RBIs.

On the mound, Katilyn Turski (Cardinal Stritch) is 17-7 with a 4.02 ERA.

The Owens CC baseball team, meanwhile, will open NJCAA Region XII tournament play in Battle Creek against Jackson CC at noon today.

Despite a 14-27 record, the Express, led by first-year coach Devin Taylor, qualified by winning the subregion tournament, including a victory over Cuyahoga CC, the OCCAC regular-season champion.

Logan Shullick leads Owens with a .378 batting average, followed by Nate Manis at .339 and Nick Collins at .333. Austin Cowen (.316) tops the team with 28 RBIs.
