Pacesetter soccer team advances to title contest


The Pacesetter/Aston Villa Super 20 soccer team advances to the national championship game by beating a squad from St. Louis 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in Bradenton, Fla.

The squad will play for the title at 10 a.m. today.

Kevin Tikhomiroff and Youseff Naciri scored for Pacesetter while Michael Soderlund had the shutout in goal.


■ ATLANTA — Panama beat 10-man Cuba 6-1 in the Gold Cup quarterfinals.

Gabriel Torres' penalty kick in the 25th minute leveled the score, and his second goal gave Panama the lead for good 13 minutes later.

Cuba played a man down and gave up four goals in the last 32 minutes after Ariel Martinez was given a red card for a hard foul against Blas Perez.

Perez scored twice, and Carlos Rodriguez and Jairo Jimenez also netted for Panama.

Mexico also advanced, beating Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 while the United States faces El Salvador and Honduras takes on Costa Rica in quarterfinals today.



HAMBURG, Germany — Roger Federer lost to Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4) in the semifinals of the German Tennis Championships.

Federer, a four-time champion in Hamburg, was outplayed by the 114th-ranked left-hander who advanced to his first final.

In the final, Delbonis will play Fabio Fognini of Italy. Fognini defeated third-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (1).

■ BAD GASTEIN, Austria — Andrea Hlavackova edged Elina Svitolina 7-5, 6-7 (1), 6-4 to set up a final against Yvonne Meusburger at the Gastein Ladies.

Meusburger reached her second straight WTA final by defeating Karin Knapp of Italy 6-4, 6-3.

■ BOGOTA, Colombia — Hometown favorite Alejandro Falla advanced to the Claro Open Colombia final, beating Canada's Vasek Pospisil 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4.

Falla, a Bogota resident, is seeking his first ATP Tour title. The 29-year-old will face Croatia's Ivo Karlovic on Sunday in the hard-court tournament at Centro de Alto Rendimiento.

Karlovic beat second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3.


College basketball

Mikaela Boyd, a point guard from Illinois, committed to the University of Toledo.

Boyd, of Proviso West near Chicago, is Toledo's third commitment in the 2014 class. She is 5-foot-7.

Boyd considered Florida Atlantic and Oakland University. Missouri expressed interest but did not offer a scholarship.
