GULLANE, Scotland — Lee Westwood has teed off in the final round of the British Open, going for his first major championship.

The 40-year-old from England began today with a two-stroke lead over Tiger Woods and Hunter Mahan — the only players under par after 54 holes at testy Muirfield.

Woods three-putted the first hole for a bogey, and Masters champion Adam Scott also started with a bogey after driving into a treacherous fairway bunker. While Woods and Scott dropped back, Henrik Stenson moved within two shots of the lead with two birdies on the first three holes.

Westwood looks relaxed, smiling and joking around with his caddie at the first tee. He’s finished his second or third a staggering seven times in major tournaments but never been able to win one.
