Buffalo at No. 2 Ohio State (Noon)

Kenny Guiton called his parents in Houston mid-Wednesday, the news yet to settle in. Could they believe it? He was a captain at Ohio State? Guiton thought back to February of 2009 when he was all set to play at Prairie View A&M — an FCS school 45 miles up the road from Houston best known for its NCAA-record 80-game losing streak in the 1990s. OSU scrambled into the picture only at the zero hour, its coaches desperate to find a third scholarship quarterback after Virginia’s Tajh Boyd spurned them for Clemson and Kettering’s Austin Boucher decided to remain committed to Miami (Ohio). The recruitment was so hurried that Guiton’s first contact with OSU came less than a week before signing day. Five years later, as No. 2 Ohio State opens the season at noon today against visiting Buffalo, the Buckeyes can’t imagine life without him.

Central Michigan at No. 17 Michigan (3:30 p.m.)

Quarterback Devin Gardner says he’s prepared to be at the helm of Michigan's 2013 season. While Michigan enters the season ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press top 25 poll, with a high-profile starting quarterback, a surgically repaired running back, and an NFL prospect who returned for a fifth year on the offensive line in Ann Arbor, the question remains: Are the Wolverines prepared? Michigan hosts Central Michigan at 3:30 p.m. at Michigan Stadium. It’s another Mid-American Conference opponent and another afternoon game in the Big House.

    Toledo at No. 10 Florida (12:21 p.m.)

Maybe some day Jeff Driskel will be swinging it, and Terrance Owens will be slinging it. For now neither wishes to make an audible to his secondary sport. The quarterbacks in today’s matchup at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium are linked in an uncommon way in that both are contracted to a Major League Baseball organization. Owens, the University of Toledo senior left-hander, was taken by the San Diego Padres in the final round of the 2012 draft. Driskel, a junior entering his second year starting with 10th-ranked Florida, went to the Boston Red Sox in the 29th round this past June. Neither player has put on a baseball uniform since he was in high school.
